PM: Haredim, Arabs must also share the national burden

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday told the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that he believes the burden of national and military service must be carried equally by all Israeli citizens, including the ultra-Orthodox and Arabs.
"I am committed to distributing the burden in a more equal way," Netanyahu said in the closed-door session. "I believe that equality in the (service) burden must include all Israeli citizens - the haredim and the Arabs."
The prime minister also spoke to the committee members about late prime minister Yitzhak Shamir, whose coffin was lying in the Knesset building ahead of his funeral at Mount Herzl later Monday evening.
"Shamir was and will be an example of public service," he said. The former prime minister "dedicated his life to the Zionist idea, to the people of Israel and to the Land of Israel."
