Mayor Barkat fires-off his Ramadan greetings

Wishing the Muslim residents of the capital, across Israel and throughout the world a "Ramadan Kareem" (the Arabic pleasantry extended during the month-long holiday) Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat fired-off a cannon heralding the end of the day's fast at the ancient Salah al-Din cemetery on Salah-al-Din Road in east Jerusalem on Wednesday evening.
The ceremonial cannon-fire is an annual tradition, which the mayor of Jerusalem has taken part in for decades – dating back to the tenure of former-Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kolleck.
The tradition of cannon fire to mark the end of the day's fast however, goes back over hundreds of years, and is a long-held Ramadan custom in Damascus and Baghdad as well as Jerusalem.
