Poll: Majority of public are against the Tal Law

The majority of the Israeli public believes that the Knesset should cancel the Tal Law, according to a Dahaf poll commissioned by Save Israeli Democracy and the Knesset Channel.

The law, approved in 2002, was designed to increase the number of haredi (ultra-Orthodox) men serving in the army, but has been criticized for failing to bring the rate of haredi recruitment up toward the national average.

According to the survey, only 28 percent of respondents believe that the law should be kept intact, a statement released by the Knesset Channel announced Wednesday.

The survey also found that 73% of respondents believe that haredim claim that prayer helps to protect Israel's security, and therefore they should be exempt from military service, is not justified. In contrast, 17% believe that this claim is justified.
