‘Nakba law’ passes first hurdle at Knesset

The Knesset passed the controversial ‘Nakba law’ in its first reading on Tuesday night.
The bill, proposed by MK Alex Miller (Israel Beiteinu), seeks to fine individuals who work to delegitimize the existence of a Jewish and democratic State of Israel, denote Independence Day as a day of mourning, support armed resistance or terrorist activity against Israel or incite to racism.
Those found guilty will pay fines amounting to up to ten percent of the cost of the subversive activity in which they had engaged.
The bill must go through second and third readings before it can pass.
