Iran executes seven convicted drug smugglers

Iran hanged seven men on Monday for smuggling drugs, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

According to Reuters, the convicted men were put to death inside a prison in the western province of Kermanshah. "They had procured and distributed narcotics ranging from 5 kg (11lb) of heroin to 100 kg (220 lb) of synthetic crack," stated prosecutor Mojtaba Maleki.

Iranian parliament passed a law last December issuing the death penalty for procurement and distribution of more than 30 g (1.06 oz) of drugs. State media reported on Saturday the execution of an additional eight other drug smugglers in the holy Shi'ite city of Qom.

Iran has one of the highest execution rates in the world. Drug trafficking, murder, adultery, rape, armed robbery, and apostasy--the renouncing of Islam--are all crimes punishable by death under Iran's Islamic law, in effect since the 1979 revolution
