Methanol fuel trial begins in Eilat

The Israel Electric Corporation and Dor Chemicals have launched the advanced stages of a pilot project to evaluate the use of methanol Eilat's power plant. To this effect, one of the production units at the Eilat power plant began operating on methanol fuel instead of diesel on Sunday, the companies said.
Eilat was chosen as the test city for this more environmentally friendly fuel due to the need to improve the reliability of the city's power supply, the firms explained. In addition to being significantly cleaner, methanol is also 15 percent cheaper than than diesel, and prices are slated to drop even further in the coming years, according to the companies.
Tankers are transporting methanol to the site via a road that bypasses Eilat directly to the plant, which is located south of the city. Meanwhile, many safety measures have been undertaken to prevent ground leaks and avoid evaporation, the companies said.
