Report: Assad sees no partner for peace in Israel

BERLIN — Syrian President Bashar Assad has been quoted as saying that his country has no partner for peace in what he terms Israel's current "extremist" government.

Syria has demanded the full withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Golan Heights, which Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war, as a condition for peace. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government rejects preconditions.

Assad was quoted Monday as saying in an interview with Germany's Bild daily: "We are prepared for peace and we have a clear plan that can lead us there. But we need a partner and we don't have one so far."

He added that Israelis "elected an extremist government that will not bring about peace. Will the Israeli people change this situation? We don't know."
