England soccer team to remember Holocaust at 2012 Euro Cup

The English national soccer team will take part in a ceremony remembering Jewish victims of the Holocaust if it qualifies for the European Cup jointly held in Poland and Ukraine next year, a British lawmaker said on Monday. Member of Parliament John Mann told participants at a gathering of lawmakers condemning anti- Semitism in Kiev that the Football Association had agreed to take part in the initiative last week.

“There is now a good chance that England will qualify,” said the Labor party member representing Nottinghamshire.

“We have agreed with the England football team that the team will take part in a ceremony or laying a plaque – probably in Poland where the team will be based – on the site of a Jewish grave to signify their commitment to the future of remembering the Holocaust.”

Mann urged other national teams to follow suit and commemorate the Holocaust during the tournament.

England currently tops group G in the qualifiers with a significant lead over its rivals.
