Senior rebel in Russia's Islamist insurgency killed

MOSCOW - Supyan Abdullayev, who waged an Islamist insurgency in Russia's North Caucasus, has been killed in clashes between rebels and law enforcement officers, websites said on Friday.
His death will be seen as a major victory for the Kremlin, which is struggling to fight militants bent on carving out an Islamic state in its impoverished, mainly Muslim south.
Chechen-born Abdullayev was the closest companion of rebel leader and fellow Chechen Doku Umarov, Russia's most wanted man, kavkazcenter.com reported. He fought against the Russians in two Chechen separatist wars.
