Hamas will allow the Palestinian Central Election Commission to update its voter registry in the Gaza Strip for the first time since 2006, a senior CEC official said on Monday.
Speaking with Hamas-affiliate Al-Resalah, CEC Executive Director Hisham Kahil said Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh gave the green light for the commission to begin its work in Gaza, which could pave the way for elections to begin throughout the territories within the next few months.
Haniyeh met with a CEC delegation lead by commission President Hanna Nasser on Monday afternoon, for discussions that Kahil described as "positive and constructive."
Delegations representing Hamas - which rules the Gaza Strip - and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah parties met in Cairo this past week and agreed to implement the Doha Accord, a previous agreement which called for a unity government that would oversee parliamentary and presidential elections.
Nasser said he hopes that the voter registrar will finish work within six weeks, AFP reported.
