French official: US Libya re-engagement would help

BRUSSELS - US re-engagement in military strikes would help NATO's Libyan military operation and Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Sweden could step up their efforts, a senior French official said on Wednesday.
The French official said European NATO allies conducting air strikes in Libya did not have A-10 "tank buster" aircraft and AC-130 gunships that are in the US arsenal, and which analysts say would be useful against Gaddafi's armor and artillery.
Sharp differences among NATO allies on the conduct of the air campaign against Muammar Gaddafi's forces surfaced publicly at a meeting of the international "contact group" on Libya in Qatar on Wednesday.
"If the United States provided resources to the current operation, so much the better," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "But we're not saying that if the US came back it would change everything."
