Police anti-corruption unit question Ben Eliezer for second time

Labor Party MK and former presidential candidate Benyamin Ben-Eliezer underwent questioning under caution again on Wednesday at police intelligence and investigations branch headquarters branch in connection to a corruption probe involving millions of shekels he allegedly received illegally.

Ben-Eliezer was questioned two days after over NIS 2 million was found in a safe deposit box belonging to Ben-Eliezer at a Bank Discount branch in Jerusalem. Police had gone to the bank after Ben-Eliezer told them in writing about the safe and did not discover it on their own.

Ben-Eliezer has been undergoing interrogations by police the past week ever since information was sent to the Attorney General's office indicating that he took millions in shekels from a number of people, in particular oil magnate Avraham Nanikashvili.

The allegations against Ben-Eliezer have centered on his acquisition of a penthouse apartment in Jaffa reported to be worth several million shekels.

Ben-Eliezer himself has said that police knew about the money and the allegations of wrongdoing for around a year and questioned why they waited until just before the presidential election. He has also referred to the investigation as a "targeted hit" by his political rivals and has vowed to clear his name.
