Former regional council head accused of defrauding ministry

A former regional council head stands accused of defrauding the Interior Ministry of hundreds of thousands of shekels earmarked for road work in his council, police reported on Wednesday.
The anti fraud unit of Lahav 433 opened the investigation into former Mashhad council head Mohammed Hassan after the Interior Ministry reported serious discrepancies in the use of funds allocated to the council, police reported.
Police say Hassan received the funds to build a ring road to bypass the village of Mashhad, and tasked a contractor to create fraudulent receipts for nonexistent road work.
Police said Hassan did not keep the funds for himself but used them for other purposes not related to the road project.
On Wednesday evening police said they plan to submit the case to northern district prosecutors in the coming days.
