State defends 'Hadera-Gedera' asylum-seekers policy

The state told the High Court of Justice on Wednesday that the Ministry of Interior was empowered by the Law of Entry to determine where so-called "infiltrators" may reside while in the country. The state's representative, Yochi Gnessin, was responding to a petition by eight human rights organizations against Interior Ministry regulations ordering asylum seekers from Darfur and Eritrea who cannot be expelled on orders from the UN, to live in parts of Israel north of Hadera and south of Gedera. Most of the asylum-seekers live in Tel Aviv. Gnessin wrote that the decision to bar the asylum-seekers from the center of the country was based on an overall perspective of how to deal with the large number of foreigners who enter Israel each year.
