Sources in the Syrian opposition claim that a defecting former Syrian
intelligence officer is seeking to auction the intelligence archives of the
former Deputy Defense Minister Assef Shawkat, according to a report published
Saturday in the Kuwaiti al-Seyassah.
The archive contains recordings and
documents related to Lebanese officials, the release of which would cause a
shock in Lebanon and the region.
According to the sources, the
intelligence officer fled to Turkey with the archives. Assef Shawkat was Syrian
President Bashar Assad's brother-in-law who was killed by an explosion at the
headquarters of the National Security Bureau in Damascus in July last year.
