NY police probes cocaine shipment sent to UN

UNITED NATIONS - The New York City Police Department and US authorities are investigating two sacks containing more than 35 pounds (16 kg) of cocaine that arrived in the UN mailroom last week, police and United Nations said on Thursday.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said two pouches with the UN logo on them arrived at the United Nations on January 16. He said UN security considered them suspicious and did not allow them into the UN complex.

They proved to contain 14 hollowed-out textbooks, each holding 2.5 pounds (1.2 kg) of cocaine wrapped in plastic for a total of 35.6 pounds (16.5 kg), with an estimated street value of $440,000, Browne said.

"We're confident ... that this was not shipped from a UN facility," said Gregory Starr, UN undersecretary-general for safety and security. "These bags were found in a private shipping company's facility, unmarked, without an airway bill on it, without addresses on it.
