Egypt monitoring Israel-Cyprus maritime border deal

Egypt is closely monitoring the recent accord signed between Israel and Cyprus demarcating their maritime borders, in order to ensure that the accord does not affect Egypt's economic zone in the Mediterranean, Egyptian newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm reported quoting Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Hossam Zaki.

The agreement, signed two weeks ago, aims to facilitate a search for mineral deposits in the east Mediterranean. Huge natural gas reserves have been discovered in the area.

Zaki said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry is conducting technical and legal research to ensure that the borders specified under the accord do not infringe on Egyptian maritime territory.
