Road near Carmel Tunnels opens

A road connecting the eastern entrance of the Carmel Tunnels to Okef Kariot has opened six months ahead of schedule, in a move that the Haifa Municipality estimates will save NIS 100 million annually.
Built by the company Yefe Nof, which was also responsible for planning the Carmel Tunnels and the Haifa Metronit, the new road aims to increase accessibility to the country’s North and decrease travel time, the company and the municipality said in a joint statement. “The huge investment in infrastructure and transportation in Haifa improves the quality of life, enabling a quick and convenient connection between North Israel and Haifa and strengthening Haifa’s position as the capital of the North,” said Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav. Construction of the 1.7-kilometer road began in the summer of 2011 and cost a total of about NIS 260m., the statement said.
