Report: Assad supporters attack Turkish Embassy in Syria

An estimated 2,000 protesters attacked the Turkish Embassy in Damascus on Monday after Turkey said it would provide refuge to Syrians fleeing Assad's forces, according to a report by Turkish newspaper Today's Zaman. The crowd was dispersed by embassy security and Syrian forces.

Turkey has recently taken a tougher stance on Syria's Assad. Newly re-elected Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the Syrian crackdown on protesters "inhumane," and described it as barbaric, Turkish newspaper Today's Zaman reported last week.

Syrian President Bashar Assad and his younger brother Maher Assad have been responsible for a violent crackdown against the civilian population over the past few weeks that the international community is beginning to call a humanitarian crisis.

Thousands have been killed and displaced in Syria in the past few weeks since the population began demanding an end to Bashar Assad's dictatorial rule and a call for democratic elections.
