Natural gas power generation reaches peak

Natural gas usage in the Israeli electricity market reached a peak on Wednesday at 2:47 p.m., accounting for 56.9 percent of electricity consumption at that point, the Israel Electric Corporation announced on Thursday. Out of the total 10,795-megawatt electricity demand at that time, 6,142 megawatts were being supplied by natural gas fuel, the company said.

Ever since natural gas from Israel's Tamar reservoir began to flow into the country in March 2013, there has been a considerable change in the fuel mix for the country's electricity production, the IEC stressed. "The use of natural gas significantly reduces emission of pollutants and greenhouse gases into the air, and the use of it in electricity generation reduces the risk of contamination of the land and of the sea from polluting fuel oils," the IEC said.
