NATO secretary-general to meet with Netanyahu in Israel

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen will arrive in Israel on Wednesday and hold talks with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and other senior government and defense officials.
On the agenda is Israeli interest in upgrading its defense ties with NATO as well as recent developments in Egypt and Iran.
Rasmussen's visit comes amid increasing calls that Israel join NATO. On Tuesday, World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder penned an op-ed in the German newspaper Die Welt in which he called on the military alliance to accept Israel as a member in order to guarantee its security.
“This would send a strong signal to other countries not to take on Israel. It would be a signal that would be understood throughout the world – including the Islamic world,” Lauder wrote.
