"The attack on the US Embassy in Damascus is just another link in the chain of the strategy of the Islamic jihadists," said Dr. Boaz Ganor, founder of the Institute of Counterterrorism and deputy dean of the Lauder School of Government at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya.
He said that it is common for attacks on Western targets to occur in Arab countries. "This sends two messages: We can hurt you wherever we want and we are active," he said.
This attack comes a day after al-Qaida released a tape threatening Israel and US targets in the region. "This is not the first time global jihadists mentioned Israel... Israel cannot turn a blind eye to this threat, however Israel is not the eye of the storm for global jihad, the entire world is the target," Ganor said.
"We cannot underestimate nor overestimate these threats. It is a combination of propaganda and increased efforts of the global jihadists to enter the region."
