Blair denies reports he plans to quit parliament

British Prime Minister Tony Blair's office moved quickly Thursday to deny a report that he intends to resign his seat in parliament when he steps down as head of government. "The only announcement the prime minister will make next week will be regarding his resignation as leader of the Labour Party," Blair's office said. The party's next leader - almost certain to be Treasury chief Gordon Brown - would then succeed him as prime minister. The Press Association, the British news agency, citing unidentified sources, had reported that Blair was expected to make the announcement in his northern England constituency of Sedgefield next Thursday.
