The European Union's budget commissioner was predicted to win the first round of Lithuania's presidential election and could become the country's first woman leader, according to an exit poll. The poll gave EU Budget Commissioner Dalia Grybauskaite 67.9 percent of the votes. That would be enough to avoid a runoff, if voter turnout is above 50 percent. One hour before polls closed at 8 p.m. (1700 GMT), the official turnout was 43 percent. Social Democrat lawmaker Algirdas Butkevicius was running a distant second with 11.8 percent in the exit poll by Baltic news agency BNS and the RAIT pollster. The poll of 4,616 people was presented on Lithuanian TV on Sunday.
