Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke in response to Knesset faction heads' announcement that general elections will be held on March 17, 2015.
"The elections are one thing: about who will lead the country," Netanyahu said.
"Amid all the challenges that the State of Israel is faced against, security and financial challenges, it needs a large ruling party. The Likud is the only party that can do this."
Shortly afterward, at the beginning of a Labor party meeting, Isaac Herzog, party chairman and leader of the opposition, said that "we are now concluding six bad years with Benjamin Netanyahu and we will do everything to bring back hope."
"We can and we should replace this government. We will lead a big Zionist front in order to change the political map and be victorious in the elections."
Next, Hatnua leader Tzipi Livni, who was fired from her post as Justice minister by Netanyahu on Tuesday, also responded with strong words regarding elections.
"It's a problem that the prime minister lies and doesn't speak the truth," she said. "We have a prime minister who is hysterical and a-f-r-a-i-d."
