Thousands of haredim are expected to turn out Wednesday for a prayer vigil against the Shabbat desecration caused by the weekend opening of a parking lot in the city, officials said. The late-afternoon event, slated to take place in the city's Mea She'arim neighborhood, is being organized by the Eda Haredit. The two-hour prayer rally and a children's march have a police permit, Jerusalem Police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said. An Eda Haredit spokesman said Tuesday that the event would be peaceful. Last month's opening of a Jerusalem parking garage Shabbat to accommodate weekend visitors to the city has spurred violent haredi protests there. The Eda Haredit official said the organization would plan its weekend actions, if any, after Wednesday's event.
