Journalist and JPost.com blogger Shmuel Rosner has won the Boris Smolar Award for journalistic excellence and will receive the $2,500 prize on March 30 in a ceremony in Mishkenot Sha'ananim in Jerusalem. Rosner was awarded the prize for a series of articles he wrote for Ha'aretz in which he presented the latest issues facing Jews in America. "Rosner succeeded in portraying an up-to-date and honest picture of American Jewry, which is steeped in dilemmas, achievements, and developments," the judges said. "Through his voyages to Jewish communities across the United States, Rosner succeeded in conveying the unique Jewish American mosaic to the Israeli reader." "In his special way," the statement added, "Rosner succeeded in portraying each community not only through the usual glasses of the Jews of the US and Israel but, rather, as a community unto itself." Rosner, 40, a father of four, is a Tel-Aviv-based journalist and editor. He is a regular contributor to American publications such as the New Republic, Slate, Commentary and others. Rosner is also the editor of the nonfiction section of the Kinneret Zmora Bitan Dvir publishing house. The annual prize, which is presented by the Joint Distribution Committee, is named after Boris Smolar, a senior journalist who was also the editor-in-chief of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA). JPost.com managing editor Shani Rosenfelder said, "Having Rosner on board contributes greatly to our content. The fact that he publishes at least one item a day if not two captures the essence of a true news blog written by a 'news junkie'." According to JPost.com CEO Amir Orni, "The cooperation with Rosner is a fine example of JPost.com's strategy of filling our readers' interests and needs. As we can see, this cooperation proves itself and we are delighted by it."
