The Israel Police should be given more personnel and resources if it is to be able to play its part in full in the war on crime, President Shimon Peres said during a visit to the National Police Headquarters in Jerusalem on Tuesday. "The police stand at the stop of the pyramid in the war against those who stray from justice, and protect those who wish for a peaceful way of life, and should therefore... be allowed to grow in personnel and resources," Peres said. "If this does not happen, society will pay a heavy price." "My impression is that the police is carrying out its duties impressively with the resources it receives," the president continued. Addressing the ambush-murder of two Judea and Samaria traffic police officers in the Jordan Valley by terrorists on Sunday, Peres said the attack "expresses in a noble way the police's mission, as the officers lost their lives while trying to provide assistance." In a farewell speech, outgoing Public Security Minister Avi Dichter described the police as "an excellent and professional" force. Dichter launched a veiled attack on Israel Beiteinu chairman Avigdor Lieberman, who has lashed out at police over the years-long investigation against him. "Why is the Israel Police not esteemed by some members of the public, unlike other bodies, and especially by some public servants... who attack the police and its investigators only because they fulfill their duty?" Dichter asked. During his visit, Peres visited technological units and examined nonlethal weapons designed to break up riots. He also viewed a movie on police work in th South during Operation Cast Lead.
