An IDF soldier was killed Tuesday morning in a non-combat related incident, defense officials announced. Golani Bridage soldier St.-Sgt. Yariv Amitai suffered serious injuries to the head after the Hummer jeep he was riding in flipped over during a routine patrol of the perimeter in the central Gaza Strip. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the accident was unknown, and military police have opened an investigation. Amitai, from Moshav Hazorim, was to have celebrated his 21st birthday in five days. His family has been notified. His funeral is planned for 9:45 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Moshav Hazorim cemetery. Two other soldiers, with light injuries, were evacuated to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba. Last Monday, an IDF reservist was killed and another soldier was seriously wounded during two separate IDF operations in the Gaza Strip. St.-Sgt. Maj. (res.) Ehud Efrati, a 34-year-old father of three and the IDF's third casualty in Gaza this year, was killed in clashes with Palestinian gunmen near the Sufa Crossing in southern Gaza. Two other soldiers from Efrati's paratrooper reservist force were lightly wounded. At least one Hamas gunman was killed during the clashes.
