WASHINGTON -- Limmud has expanded its conference focused on Soviet Jewry in America this year to a three-day gathering, which kicked off Friday night in Princeton.More than 500 members of the US Russian Jewish community sold out the event, according to Sandra Cahn, a co-founder of Limmud FSU in America, which began in 2009.Cahn explained that the idea for a special Limmud FSU grew out of the realization that few Russian Jews were participating in the regular Limmud."The Russian-speaking community in America, though very integrated in many ways ... have a cultural affinity that's very special [and] they wanted to be empowered and have control over their own destiny," she said.The Princeton conference will focus on traditional Limmud themes of Jewish learning, culture and history but with a Russian twist. Several of the sessions, some held in Russian, will examine the experience of FSU Jews in America and recent developments in the Russian Federations. And because it's taking place on the grounds of the university at which Albert Einstein once worked, the renowned scientest's life and work will be discussed over the thee days.
