An Oklahoma representative was criticized for using the phrase "try to Jew me down" on the Oklahoma House floor, The Tulsa World reported Thursday.
Republican co-majority leader Dennis Johnson took part in a debate over whether small businesses can compete with big box chains on Wednesday.
Johnson was arguing that service and not price were the key to success, and then acknowledged that some customers "try to Jew me down," according to The Tulsa World.
He then apologized, saying "Jews run good small businesses, too."
"Jew down" is a derogatory term that means trying to haggle or bargain down the price of an item.
The chamber accepted the apology and moved on, House Speaker T.W. Shannon said according to his spokesman.
