Eight outstanding school-pupils and volunteers received the Ramon Award in memory of fallen Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon and his son, Asaf, from Knesset speaker MK Yuli Edelstein on Thursday.
The award, created by the Science, Technology and Space Ministry and the Ramon Foundation, was handed to the winners by Ramon’s widow, Rona Ramon and Minister Yaakov Peri.
The astronaut died in a decade ago in the Columbia shuttle disaster, while his son perished in a training flight in 2009.
The winners were Damas Pikde of Holon; Hadas Hevron of Mevasseret Zion; Yoni Halatnik of Kiryat Ata; Karina Kaviat of Beersheba; Koral Dik of Rishon Lezion; and Adham Hasin of Rama.
Among their achievements were raising money for public libraries in the Druse community, raising funds for medications for foreign workers, serving as tutors for special-needs children and establishing a school debating society.
