Peace Now director calls on education minister to abolish Gush Katif education day

Director says day planned by Gush Katif evacuees is "a day for right wing propaganda that attempts to provide a one-sided and biased narrative."

Yariv Oppenheimer, general director for Peace Now, penned a letter to Education Minister Shai Piron on Thursday requesting the abolishment of Gush Katif education day in schools.

“Gush Katif day has in practice become a day for right-wing propaganda that attempts to provide a one-sided and biased narrative and does not allow for the existence of a balanced discourse to listen to additional stances and opinions,” wrote Oppenheimer.

According to the Peace Now director, the content for the education day comes from a committee of Gush Katif evacuees, which constitutes “a body with a clear political ideological agenda that promotes rightwing political messages.”

Furthermore, writes Oppenheimer, teachers are expected to fall in line and “recite” this one-sided narrative which does not conform to their beliefs and without the possibility to hold an open discussion on the matter.

“It is inconceivable that the educational system forces upon teachers and students controversial political messages, and enables the introduction of political propaganda, without providing a platform to the other side as well,” the letter stated.

Piron did not respond to requests for comment by press time.
