A wildfire destroyed eight homes and damaged three others in a northern California community and efforts were under way to contain a blaze that threatened 40 structures in another area, officials said on Saturday.

A grass fire swept into Collinsville, California early on Friday afternoon and before it was contained it had ripped through 11 homes, said Fire Chief Joe Rosewall of the Montezuma Fire Protection District in Solano County.

No one was injured but 25 people were left without homes, Rosewall said.

The blaze caused an estimated $2.5 million of damage in Collinsville, a small community between San Francisco and Sacramento along the Sacramento River, Rosewall said.

In Yolo County west of Sacramento, a fire burned about 5,000 acres and was 30 percent contained by Saturday afternoon, according to a Facebook report by the Office of the State Fire Marshal of California.
