Gallery: Israel the Beautiful - fall favorites

In a new column, professional photojournalist Yehoshua Halevi brings Israel to life with his unique photo essays.

Fall is one of Israel’s best kept secrets, with stunning fall foliage from the desert to the northern border. In Israel, the best thing about fall foliage – besides its spectacular beauty – is its longevity.

The climate is moderate and shifts slowly toward colder, wetter weather, making the transition from summer to winter more gradual than in the US, yet in some places just as dramatic as the autumnal color displays in New England.

Here is a selection of photos I shot across Israel, from the Judean Mountains to the Galilee and Golan Heights.

A mixture of plantings produces a rainbow of seasonal color on this hillside near Rosh Pina.

Seemingly on fire in the waning afternoon light, this valley below Efrat in Gush Etzion features a mix of yellow grape vines and orange fruit trees.

Olive, pear, plum and eucalyptus combine to create this bucolic fall scene in an orchard near Metualla in the northern Galilee.

Using a technique known as compositional framing, this image features a view through a colorful grapevine in the Judean Mountains to the warmly colored hillside on the opposite slope.

The rapid expansion of Israel’s wine industry during the past five years has led to widespread planting of vineyards across the country. Here, a mix of grape varieties produces a range of colorful fall vines in the Judean Mountains in Gush Etzion.

Yehoshua Halevi has worked more than 25 years as a professional photojournalist, teacher, mentor and photographer of lifecycle events. His credits include major publications, highlighted by National Geographic, as well as non-profit organizations, corporations and private individuals. He is available for assignments worldwide and his work can be seen and purchased online at Photography by Yehoshua Halevi .
