A monument to iconic actress Hanna Rovina, known as the "First lady of Hebrew theater," has been officially unveiled on Tel Aviv's Rehov Gordon, reports www.local.co.il. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Ron Huldai, representatives of the Habima theater and members of the Rovina family. Rovina, born in Belorussia in 1889, became an actress in the Jewish theater there and immigrated to Palestine with her fellow Habima actors in 1928.
She soon became a symbol of early Hebrew theater and of the Habima in particular, and won the Israel Prize in 1956. She also had a daughter, well-known singer Ilana Rovina, from her relationship with famed poet Alexander Penn. Hanna Rovina remained active almost up to her death in February, 1980.
