Surgeons warn of looming crisis

Prof. Michael Kraus, said it might become necessary to bring surgeons in from abroad to relieve the workload.

Senior surgeons at Haifa's Rambam Hospital are warning of a looming disaster in the near future caused by a shortage of qualified young surgeons, reports Yediot Haifa. The surgeons say their long hours, difficult working conditions and low pay are driving young doctors away from the profession and causing a shortage of surgeons at many hospitals. The head of Rambam's surgical department, as well as the head of Israel's surgeons' union, Prof. Michael Kraus, said it might become necessary to bring surgeons in from abroad to relieve the workload. Other doctors at Rambam said all medical authorities should work together to come up with a solution for the impending crisis.
