Blast from the past
The long-running annual Yemei Zemer Festival will take place at Holon Theater for the 20th year in succession, from April 5 to 8. As usual, the lineup features some of the biggest names in the local pop and rock industry – including Shlomo Gronich, Matti Caspi, Shlomi Shaban and Ester Rada.
Traditionally, the festival focuses on time-honored favorites, and the program features a show dedicated to the work of Gronich – who, along with veteran TV presenter and lyricist Amos Ettinger, will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. The Gronich tribute, Sympathy of Sounds, takes in some of his biggest hits, including “Yesh Li Simpatya,” “Shirim Peshutim,” “Rosa Marzipan” and “Shir Yisraeli.” Gronich’s old sparring partner Caspi, and the harmonica-playing Adler Trio – which includes Gronich’s wife, Michal Adler – will be on board for the salute.
Fans of Latin sounds should enjoy the “Tropical Country.co.il” concert, which covers material from Spain and South America, while nostalgia will rule the roost at the “Ma Avarech” concert dedicated to the work of late composer Yair Rosenblum; the lineup for the latter includes veteran performers Rivka Zohar, Sassi Keshet, Hanan Yovel and Miri Aloni. Elsewhere on the festival roster there are shows by Shem-Tov Levi, who will perform with a string trio, and slots based on the works of such titans of the Israeli pop community as Yoram Taharlev, Yaakov Hollander and Shimrit Or.

Nabucco revisited
The Israel Opera House will put on 18 performances of a new production of Verdi’s Nabucco from April 7-25. Verdi’s “Jewish” opera tells the tale of King Nebuchadnezzar, who destroys the First Temple in Jerusalem and exiles the Israelites to Babylon, where they sing the iconic slave chorus.
Conducting duties will be shared by Daniel Oren and Italian counterpart Francesco Ivan Ciampa, and the show is based on a co-production between the Israeli Opera and the Opera Royal de Wallonie of Liège, Belgium. The production will be overseen by the Belgian company’s general and artistic director Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera, with Eithan Schmeisser responsible for the choral side of the venture.
