City notes: Rocking out the New Year

NORTH
Spend Friday night enjoying a concert by Dudu Tassa, one of Israel’s leading rock musicians, at Zappa’s Haifa venue. There’s no better way to begin the new year than with live music, positive energy and of course some good groove, all of which Tassa is sure to provide during his performance. Sing along to all of his top hits, including “Hagole,” which was named best new single when it was released in 2016.

‘Slihot’ tour soul cleanse
Experience the Old City of Acre days before Yom Kippur with a guided slihot tour filled with history, prayers, musical pieces and liturgical poetry. The tour includes the Ramhal Synagogue, where a performance of liturgy will be held, and will conclude by the sea, where the option is given of performing the custom of tashlich.

Eden Ben Zaken takes on Beersheba
Pop star Eden Ben Zaken is coming to Beersheba on Tuesday night to serenade you and keep you on your toes with her nonstop pop hits. Making her breakthrough in the Israeli music scene at the age of 18, when she she won second place on the television singing competition Israel’s X Factor, Ben Zaken hasn’t left the spotlight since. The beloved singer has won female singer of the year both in 2015 and 2016 and her first album, Queen of Roses, went platinum. Her performance will be followed by a special Middle Eastern party.

Light up the night in Jaffa
The best works by art-school graduates throughout the country join together on display in the streets of Jaffa in light boxes at the First Light exhibition. This special display inaugurates a street gallery in an alley of Old Jaffa, where a permanent public display of light boxes is to be featured all year long. The 60 best works from Israeli art schools will be featured at the outdoor art gallery until October 31, after which the artworks will be changed periodically.

Haredi artists debut their works
Faith and art come together at a special exhibition in Jerusalem by artists from the Omanut Ve’emuna gallery in the Jaffa Flea Market. This first-of-its-kind project features the works of ultra-Orthodox artists. The “Between the Sacred and the Profane” exhibition is a breakthrough into the secular Israeli art scene and is a revolutionary step for haredi artists in Israel whose work is inspired by Jewish customs and prayer. This special event will include a musical performance by Ushpizin’s Shuli Rand and is to be attended by Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon.
The exhibition will take place on Monday, September 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Beit Ot Hamutzar, 12 Derech Hebron, Jerusalem, with separate seating for men and women. For more information and registration, contact art.emuna.office@gmail.com.
