Celebrated US dance company the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will come to Israel to give six performances at the end of the month.

Celebrated US dance company the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will come to Israel to give six performances at the end of the month.
The company will perform three programs on its tour here, spanning over half a century of artistic creativity.
Programs A and B will be performed at the Center for the Performing Arts in Tel Aviv, with a separate program slated for the Jerusalem show.
The oldest work is everpopular Revelations, which since its launch in 1960 has become one of the best-loved works in the history of American dance. Program A also includes Arden Court, which was created in 1981 by Paul Taylor and set to a sumptuous baroque score composed by William Boyce.
One of the most emotive pieces in the company’s repertoire here is Home, which was created by hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris last year, and is inspired by stories of AIDS sufferers. Ailey himself died in 1989, at the age of 58, from an AIDS-related condition.
Program B includes Ailey’s 1979 work Memoria, which was set to music by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett and inspired by the untimely death of Ailey’s friend dancer-choreographer Joyce Trisler. The works for the Jerusalem show include present company director Robert Battle’s Unfold, created in 2005, and Ailey’s Night Creature, which was first performed in 1974 and is a tribute to the music of iconic jazz pianist-composer-bandleader Duke Eillington.
The Jerusalem show will take place at the Jerusalem Theater on September 29, with the Tel Aviv slots taking place from October 2 to 6.
Classic jazz
The St. Nicholas Monastery in Old Jaffa will host a rich program of jazz and classical material, on September 29 at 6 p.m., performed by a family trio supported by the Jerusalem festival Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Bershevitz.
The familial soloists include 20-year-old twin clarinetists Daniel and Alexander Garfinkel, and their clarinetplaying father Michael, who also serves as first clarinetist of the Israeli Symphony Orchestra and the Israeli Opera.
The concert will feature classical works seasoned with jazz harmonies and rhythms.

Kibbutz museum hits 30
The Bar-David Museum in Kibbutz Baram in the Galilee will mark its 30th anniversary with a gala opening of two new extensive exhibitions tomorrow at 1 p.m.
The first central show is called “To Collect or Cease,” curated by Dalia Balkin. The show comprises a reconstruction of the life of Moshe Bar- David, whose collections form the basis of the museum.
The exhibition comprises items from Bar-David’s home in Haifa from the mid- 20th century. Bar-David donated thousands of historic and artistic exhibits to the museum.
The Pearls of the Collection show includes exhibits that will be displayed in all the museum spaces and incorporates paintings, photographs and sculptures based on a wide range of themes, such as theater, abstract art, nature, portraits and Bibles.
The Pearls of the Collection exhibition is curated by Saul Lanzini.
The museum also houses a large collection of Judaica, and archeological finds from the whole of the Middle East.

Real jam for Rishon
The Marmalada Market Internet shopping domain has taken on tangible form.
Yesterday, the Rova area of the industrial sector of Rishon Lezion played host to stalls set up by 40 designers and artists who offered a wide range of fashion items, accessories, jewelry and children’s clothing to the public.
The event will take place at the Rova every Thursday, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., and shoppers will be able to browse the items on sale, with the brand range including Ilie Goren, My Secret Face, Mik Mak, Rafaela Calderon and Timor Shahar, while bands play live music.
