US soldier killed by roadside bomb in northeast of Baghdad

A roadside bomb killed a US soldier Tuesday northeast of Baghdad, the military said. The Task Force Lightning soldier was killed in an explosion near a vehicle in Diyala province, according to a brief statement that provided no further details. US troops have launched a series of offensives to clear the area of insurgents. The death raised to at least 3,799 members of the US military who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
