US soldier killed in fighting near northern Iraqi city of Beiji

A US soldier was killed in fighting in northern Iraq, the military said Monday. The Multi-National Corps - Iraq soldier died of wounds sustained Friday during combat operations near Beiji, 250 kilometers (155 miles) north of Baghdad, according to a brief statement that provided no other details. The soldier's identity was not released pending notification of relatives. The death raised to at least 3,816 members of the US military who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
