Two men killed in Taibe drive-by

Two men were shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in Taibe, 12 km. east of Kfar Saba, on Friday night, the latest in a long tit-for-tat war between rival clans that has claimed several victims. A Mazda carrying two passengers was driving through eastern Taibe when a second car containing a gunman passed by. The Mazda was sprayed with bullets, and two men, aged 40 and 23, were hit. They died en route to the hospital. The shooting took place on a main road in Taibe that connects Routes 44 and 24.

Police wages set to finally rise

After years of requests and months of negotiations, the Finance and Public Security ministries have finally reached a deal allowing for a pay rise for junior police officers.

Under the new arrangement, starting officers will be paid around NIS 7,000 a month, instead of the current 5,000 they get during their first five years of service. Police say this will allow them to recruit more officers.

“An injustice has been redressed,” Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch said on Friday. Aharonovitch has in the past described the salary levels as “disgraceful” and said that officers were unable to support their families. The negotiations were also attended by representatives from the Israel Police and the Prisons Service.

Aharonovitch is now focusing on increasing payments to retired police and Prisons Service officers.

Wife of Yitzhak Shamir dies at 88

Shulamit Shamir, the wife of former prime minister Yitzhak Shamir, died on Friday in Tel Aviv at the age of 88.

Shulamit Shamir immigrated to Israel from Bulgaria in 1941 and was sent to prison because she came to Mandatory Palestine illegally, on a rickety boat. She joined Lehi (the Stern Group) and met Yitzhak Shamir. They married in 1923. The former prime minister will turn 96 in October.

In 2004, his health declined and he was moved to a nursing home.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke with the family and sent his condolences on behalf of the nation.
