Burglars broke into the north Tel Aviv home of the daughter of late prime minister Yitzhak Shamir on Monday as she attended her father’s funeral in Jerusalem.The thieves wandered through the home and snatched valuable jewelry before escaping, as Gilada Diamant, Shamir’s daughter, and her family were mourning the death of her 96-year-old father at Mount Herzl in the capital.Police were called to the home after the mourners returned to the funeral and discovered the break-in.Although thieves have been known to deliberately target homes of people who recently died or bereaved relatives, police say it remains unclear whether in this case, the burglars had knowingly picked the home of Shamir’s daughter.An investigation is under way.During the state funeral on Sunday, which was broadcast live, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu praised Shamir for his days as a commander of the underground Jewish group, the Lehi, during the prestate years.“Shamir, even later in his political life, in his heart and in his modest behavior, continued to see himself as the same anonymous soldier serving the country. He did not look for popularity or respect. Every decision of his stood up to one test: Is it good for the Jewish people and Israel?” Netanyahu stated.The prime minister also praised Shamir for his “great contribution” to bringing millions of Jews from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia to Israel.Jerusalem Post staff contributed to this report.
