A Border Police volunteer shot to death a Palestinian man in Petah Tikva Saturday after the Palestinian tried to stab him in an attempt to escape arrest.
The Palestinian, in his 20s, was found near the city’s Yarkon cemetery by a paramilitary Border Police unit searching for Palestinians who did not have a permit to stay in Israel, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.
The shooting critically injured the Palestinian, and he succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.
The Border Police opened an investigation into the shooting.
Some Palestinians enter the country illegally looking for work in the more lucrative Israeli job market. Earlier this month, a soldier was stabbed to death on a bus by a Palestinian who crossed without a permit.Reuters contributed to this report.
Correction: A previous version of this story stated the Palestinian attacked the Border policeman with an axe. It is unclear whether that is the case.
