Palestinian prisoner vows to continue hunger strike

Palestinian Hana Shalabi, affiliated with Islamic Jihad, vows to continue hunger strike despite two-month detention reduction.

Palestinian prisoner Hana Shalabi has vowed to continue her hunger strike despite the Ofer Military Court’s decision to cut her detention period by two months.
The IDF arrested Shalabi in mid-February from her home in the village of Burkin, near Jenin, and placed her under administrative detention for six months.
Since then, she has been on a hunger strike to protest against her incarceration, her lawyer and family said.
Shalabi is affiliated with Islamic Jihad and was detained by Palestinian Authority security forces in the West Bank in 2009 because of her activities.
On Sunday, Shalabi’s lawyer, Fadi Qawasmeh, visited her in Hasharon Prison and notified her of the military court’s decision to reduce her period of detention by two months.
The lawyer said that his client told him that she was determined to continue with her hunger strike despite the court’s decision.
Shalabi was released in the Gilad Schalit prisoner-exchange agreement in October 2011 after spending 25 months in administrative detention.
