The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra’s (IPO) 75th season and Zubin Mehta’s 50th year with them is an opportunity to treat yourself to the beautiful sounds of classical music from one of the world’s finest orchestras as well as an internationally acclaimed conductor. And what better way to do this than with one of these two amazing 12 disk compilations.

The first set showcases the vast repertoire of the IPO. Ranging from Vivaldi to Stravinsky, the pieces represent some of the most beloved and beautiful works that appeal to a wide audience. These works, conducted by some of the finest conductors from the world over, are part of the IPO’s tradition of excellence, and represent some of their finest moments. For instance, the first disk contains Schubert’s Symphony no. 5 conducted by Sir Georg Solti in 1958. This concert was one of the earliest in their new facility, the Mann Auditorium. In disk 5 you’ll get Leonard Bernstein conducting his own work, the Chichester Psalms, recorded in 1978, while he was the IPO’s Laureate Conductor. Other conductors included here are Jean Martinon (who also served one year as Musical Director for the IPO), Carlo Maria Giulini and the current IPO’s Honorary Guest Conductor Kurt Masur. To finish off the set, you get the IPO’s recording of the Israeli National Anthem, HATIKVA with the Philharmonic Singers joined by the exceptional Israeli children’s choir ANKOR.

The other compilation is no less impressive, and is a collection of IPO works all conducted by Maestro Zubin Mehta – the one and only IPO Musical Director. This set proves why the relationship between Mehta and the IPO that began in May of 1961 is both harmonious and unequalled. In keeping with the IPO and Zubin Mehta’s commitment to promoting local talent, this also highlights Israeli and Jewish artists. This means that alongside pieces performed by world famous artists such as Daniel Barenboim, Isaac Stern, and tenor Richard Tucker, you’ll listen to Israelis Arie Vardi on piano, Chaim Taub on violin, and soprano Sharon Rostorf-Zamir. This collection is also particularly special with its collection of composers from different classical eras. While Mozart is prominent here, you’ll also get one of Verdi’s best loved pieces, his Requiem as well as the unique Vivaldi concerto for two violins. Together with this, there are pieces from more modern composers such as Alan Berg and Eric Zeisl. But the jewel in the crown here is the last disc which is dedicated to five amazing Israeli composers – Noam Sheriff, Josef Tal, Tzvi Avni, Joseph Kaminski and Avner Dorman (whose father plays bassoon with the IPO).
These two 12 disk collections are truly a must buy for any lover of classical music, and anyone who is a fan of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Zubin Mehta.
