Rafic, Shor boost Israel’s medal haul to seven

Mayan Rafic ensured the Youth Olympics in Singapore ended on a sweet note for the Israeli delegation after finishing first in the boys’ windsurfing competition on Wednesday, claiming the blue-and-white’s fourth gold of the Games.
The 16-year-old led throughout the competition and secured the gold after coming in fourth place in Wednesday’s medal race.
Naomi Cohen came agonizingly close to adding to Israel’s medal tally, ending the women’s windsurfing contest in fourth position with her disappointing eighth-place finish in the medal race.
Rotem Shor, however, ensured that the delegation would end the Games with seven total medals when she took a bronze in the judo team competition.
Wednesday’s performances capped a very successful Olympics for Israel’s youngsters.
About 3,600 competitors aged 14 to 18 from 205 countries competed in the same 26 sports that are on the current Summer Olympics program, and despite sending a small 15-athlete delegation, Israel has got plenty to show from its 12 days in Singapore.
Gili Haimovitz took Israel’s first gold medal at the inaugural Youth Olympics after his Iranian opponent was forced to withdraw in the final of the taekwondo under-48 kilogram competition.
Yakov Toumarkin was Israel’s only double medal winner, claiming silver medals in both the 100-meter and 200m backstroke finals.
Fanny Beisaron won a gold in the triathlon team competition, with Dima Kruyter finishing first in the high-jump final.
