Ma’ayan Davidovich joined Lee Korzits on the podium at the windsurfing World
Championships in Buzios, Brazil, on Wednesday, winning the bronze medal after
her fellow Israeli had already clinched the gold a day
earlier.
Davidovich ended the final Medal Race in ninth place, but she
dropped just a single position in the overall standings to third and claimed her
first ever medal at the worlds.
The 24-year-old represented Israel at the
2008 Beijing Olympics, but lost out to Korzits for a place in last summer’s
London Games despite claiming a silver medal at the 2012 European
Championships.
However, she seems intent on giving Korzits a real fight
for Israel’s single berth at Rio 2016, although she will struggle to do so
should Korzits continue amassing world titles at the current rate.
After
heartbreakingly missing out on a medal in London, Korzits wrapped up her third
straight world title on Tuesday, taking her total tally of golds in the
competition to four.
“I’m filled with so much joy,” Korzits wrote on her
Facebook page.
“This is the sweetest title of them all. I understood that
I’m filled with love and it prevails over everything. For the first time I feel
like a champion on the inside.”
The Israeli men failed to meet the
standard set by their female counterparts on Wednesday, with both Nimrod Mashiah
and Shahar Zubari missing out on a medal in Buzios.
Mashiah entered the
Medal Race tied for third position, but he only managed a ninth-place finish in
the decisive day, dropping to sixth overall. Zubari ended the Medal Race in 10th
place, remaining in seventh overall.
