David Berger will be inducted posthumously into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum on April 21, 2013.David, a middle-weight weightlifter on the 1972 Israeli Olympic Team, was one of the ‘Munich 11’ Jewish athletes who were murdered at the 1972 Olympics.David was a National Merit Scholar who won bronze and gold medals in the 1965 and 1969 Maccabiah Games in Israel, respectively.In 1969, he was a gold medalist at the US Junior Weightlifting competition.He received his bachelor’s degree from Tulane University in 1966 and graduate degrees in business and law from Columbia University.In 1970, he made aliyah, moving to Tel Aviv. Though he retained his US citizenship, David was to begin his Israeli military service in October of 1972, but he never got that chance to serve.The national Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is dedicated to honoring Jewish athletes, coaches, broadcasters and others who have distinguished themselves in the world of sports.
